Two German Junkers Ju.88 bombers attack the British light cruiser HMS Calcutta 100 nautical miles (185 km) north of Alexandria, Egypt, as she retires after evacuating troops from Crete. Calcutta was hit by two bombs and sank, with 255 men being rescued by HMS Coventry and 107 men killed or missing
