I've been reading about the height requirements for becoming a pilot and most of my research indicates that you would have to be 64 inches to get a job anywhere. I'm 3 inches short of that.
Does anyone know if the height requirements vary...or is that the standard?
Is 64 inches just for the Air Force??

Eye Requirements

Hi, im a freshman and have pretty much wanted to be a fighter pilot since I was 5 years old; however, there has been one thing that I am constantly worried and confused about. That is the vision requirements. Why the confusion? Well, for example, AF and Navy online recruiters tell me totally different information from what my personal recruiters and other websites tell me. My recruiters say you can go in and don't worry about it while the online recruiters say NO. Many people also say that you have to have 20/20 CORRECTED which I do but the requirements last I checked require that you cannot exceed a certain amount of nearsightedness. Still my recruiters say don't worry about it. I have a nearsightedness of 20/200 (Sounds bad doesnt it?) and have better then 20/20 corrected. AF requirement is something like no worse then 20/70 and Navy is like 20/30 (or 20/100 laisik if you get accepted) but then I hear that you can get waivered. But whats this? Online recruiters say NO. Who is telling the truth here? You would have though the military government woudnt contradict itself. Who is telling the truth here? All other requirements I meet such as height and stuff like that. Should I worry about this? Becoming a fighter pilot is extremely important to me. Ive always wanted to fight for my country and do it by flying fighter aircraft. I know its not all RUSH and High Speed addrenalin and all that ALL THE TIME but it is something I really want to be and im not going to let my eyesite stop me. When I think of earning my gold wings it almost overwhelms me with emotions (sounds cheesy but its true) and when I here the roar of a fighter jet I think its amazing. I am currently in the process of starting private pilot lessons so as to atain my private pilots licence and am working on my grades extremely hard. Also when I have attained my drivers licence I will start getting into leadsership programs and stuff were you help others out. This is extremely important to my life and I want an honest answer or opinion.

Thankyou.

(And I just noticed I posted this thread in the wrong forum topic... sorry about that!)

Any homeschoolers at the Air Force Academy?

Greetings fellow homeschoolers!

I am the father of a 15 year old freshman son who very much wants to win an appointment to the Air Force Academy. My son, Chris, has been homeschooled all his life. I fully support his desire to serve our country, and am willing to do whatever is within my ability to help him prepare for this very competative road he's chosen. But, I need help. I need the advice of others who have been down this road before.

If there are any people out there that have any knowledge and/or experience with homeschoolers that have gotten into the military service academies, I'd love to hear from you. I need to know the do's and don'ts. I know that being homeschooled means that he is going to have to prove himself that much more, but I also know that there are homeschoolers that have made it in and through the academies.

I know that extra-curricular activities are important, especially sports, but I need guidance in this area especially. Any advice in any area that you think would be helpful will be appreciated. HS Senior in Distress

Greeting! I'm a high school senior, and I'm in a dliemma right now.
First of all, I have applied to both, Annapolis and Air Force Academy. From what I've been told is that I will have no problem being accepted to either. The problem is, my congressman can only give me one nomination, either Annapolis or Air Force. Since I was a kid, I have always wanted to be an Air Force pilot, but I've had second thoughts this past week, and changed my priority nomination to Annapolis. From the research I've been doing, and the people I've spoken to, I think that there is more of an opportunity in the Navy to be a fighter pilot. Statistically, apparently at Annapolis, 99% of those who wanted to go to pilot training got the slot. 216 people from last year's graduating class went to pilot training. On the other hand, the Air Force Academy sends about half of their graduating class to pilot training.
The reason I changed my mind and am currently deciding to fly navy is that I really really really want to be a fighter pilot. It seems like there is more opportunity in the Navy, cause everything in the Navy is either fighter, or fighter support. I would really hate to go to the Air Force Academy, graduate, and serve a 10 year commitment flying the "heavies." Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that there is more opportunity in the Navy to be a fighter pilot.
Also, I think that the experiences that I can get in the Navy outweigh those I can get in the Air Force. I think in the Navy that there is more opportunity to see the world, and I also think that taking off and landing from an aircraft carrier would be sweet. I'm also looking at the distant future. Apparently, the Naval Academy generates more astronauts than any other university, and I have also considered being an astronaut in the future.
Another reason that I am currently choosing Navy over Air Force is the location of the bases. Navy has Air Stations in pretty nice places (i.e. San Diego, Corpus Christi, Pensacola, etc.). Air Force has bases in pretty crappy places (ex. Holloman, and Kirkland). I think the only disadvantage in the Navy is being stuck on a carrier for so long. But I would rather be stuck on a carrier flying a "Super Hornet" than being stuck on land flying a "Heavy."
I know this is long and thank you for reading. I really hope I made the right decision to change my priority nomination to Annapolis instead of Air Force Academy. I would really like to talk to an military pilots and hear their advice. If any of you have AOL Instant messenger my screen name is StreetbikerFZR. Thanks in advance for any advice.

First off, I am seriously considering going to USAFA. I would someday love to fly a fighter jet and am a very motivated person and plan on going there. My current GPA is about a 3.3 (however I plan on getting that up to a 3.5), and I do several sports. I'm also involved in several clubs at my high school, not to mention being an Eagle Scout, and working a job. I've also contacted my congress man as well. Has anyone been through the USAFA and know a thing or two about getting accepted? This would be VERY helpful. One last thing, I'm about 6'2", is this too tall to be in the Academy?? I had heard something about that. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm a Junior in high school, but I'm graduating this year. I'm going to spend a year in a church program after I graduate. After I'm done with that, I want to become a doctor, and join the Air Force. I could go through a program like the AFHPSP and get helped in paying for college, but I think it would be best if I was in the Air Force Academy. I wish I had this goal 3 years ago, because I would have prepared much more.

I'm in good health, was on the football team for a year, and on the debate team for 2 years, but my grades are really going to hurt my chances of getting accepted. I heard there was an Academy Prep School that was available. Does anyone have the details about that? Thanks.

I'm thinking Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and wanted to know if anyone is going there or has friends going to that college. I'm thinking my major will be Aeronautical Science, Airline Pilot Specialty because after my career in the Air Force(Fighter Pilot) I would like to fly for a major airliner. So I guess I would like to know how is ERAU? (Is it impossable to pass the tests,is it impossable to even get in?) Thank for anything you guys have to say.

-Lt.

a choice of major

i am currently attending a four-year accredited college, and im wondering if it matters what major or degrees are applicable in order to become a fighter pilot.
do they recommend math and science engineering degrees or does it even matter?

thank you, your response is greatly appreciated.

jsaf

I want to become a Pilot, but...

I was borned in New York in 1986, and have been living here in South Africa for the last 10 years or so. Threw all the years, I loved the idia of becoming a Military Pilot, but not for The South Africa Air Force.

I'm faced with uncertanty in my life. I don't know what i'll be doing in the next few years, but flying has always been on my mind. When i'm watching Descovery Channel and National Geography, i get jelous by just seeing Fighter pilots, carying their flight ecuipment and walking to their Fighters! Its just overwhelming to see that these pilots get paid to Fly Million dollar planes and love it! Its this kind of things that has been bugging me.

I'm at my final year in Secondary School and, with great regret, I don't have Math of Science. But i'm thingking of going to college and catch up with the last 3 years of Math and science.

i believe one needs to go to college, and then apply for officer training and then for a devision (NAVY, ARMY, AIR FORCE etc.)

It would be a great acheavement for me to become one but i got to have math and science to catch up in college. I never back down from a challenge and becoming a Pilot is my my greatest challenge that i want to fulfill.

any assistence in to what i can do in my present stage will be very much appreciated.

Please e-mail me at:
boemmiesssniper@hotmail.com

preparing yourself

Hi

I'm just wondering how all you other guys here who wants to be fighterpilots prepare yourself mentaly for the selection process. I figure that they'd fly past their sound before it got into the radio, and it'd be the same way if they were trying to hear a radio communication. I've thought of every possibility I could think of, and the only conclusion I could come up with is that they don't comunicate while flying Mach 1+. So am I right, or is there just something I haven't thought about yet?
